Opened a Tesla referral link inside Instagram or WhatsApp? Read this before ordering

Short answer
Do the whole thing in one browser. If you tapped the link inside an app, either finish the order in that same in-app window, or copy the link, open it in Safari or Chrome, and start again there before configuring. Opening in one place and ordering in another is how the referral gets lost.
Referral link: if you order through it, this site's owners may earn Tesla credits. Tesla applies any buyer benefit at checkout. Independent — not affiliated with Tesla, Inc.
What an in-app browser is
When you tap a link inside Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, TikTok, LinkedIn or (on some phones) WhatsApp, the page usually opens in a browser built into that app, not in Safari or Chrome. It looks like a normal web page, often with the app's own bar at the top or bottom. It keeps its own cookies and sign-ins, separate from your main browser.
Why that matters for a referral
A Tesla referral attaches when you open the link and then order from there. Tesla's own instructions are two steps: visit the referral link, then purchase from it (Tesla's Refer and Earn support page (read Jun 15, 2026)). The link is remembered by the browser session that opened it. So the common failure looks like this: you tap a friend's link in Instagram, look around, close it, and a week later order on your laptop or in the Tesla app. The laptop never saw the link. Because Tesla's terms say referral links “cannot be credited after the order is placed”, that order stays without one.
The order of taps that works
01
Copy the link
Long-press it in the app (or use the share menu) and choose “Copy link”.
02
Open it in the browser you'll order in
Paste it into Safari, Chrome or your laptop's browser. Check the page shows the owner's name, benefit cards and your currency.
03
Configure and order from that page
Sign in when Tesla asks — with the account that will own the car — and finish in that same window.
How to tell you're in an in-app browser
There's an app name or a “…” menu at the top instead of your browser's address bar.
The menu offers “Open in Safari”, “Open in Chrome” or “Open in browser”. That option is the cleanest fix: use it right away, before configuring.
You're not signed in to anything, even sites you're always signed in to.
iOrdering inside the in-app browser can work too, as long as you open the link and finish the order there. It's just a cramped place to fill in delivery and payment details, which is why most people switch halfway — and that switch is where the referral goes missing.
Sending a link? Help your friend avoid this
Add one line to your message: “Open this in your normal browser before you start configuring.” More on that in sending your link so it works.
